I recently visited Debenham Vets, where practice owner Jade Martin shared the immense challenges they’ve faced since Storm Babet devastated their main building. While restoration is ongoing, the team has adapted impressively, operating from temporary buildings in the car park despite issues with access, parking, and space constraints.
Beyond veterinary care, Debenham Vets is a vital part of the community, employing over 50 local people and providing support to charities, pet owners, and animal welfare initiatives. Yet, like many independent practices, they face growing pressure from multi-chain competitors, which benefit from supplier discounts unavailable to them. Despite this, they remain committed to training the next generation of veterinary professionals and maintaining their high standard of care.
We also discussed concerns about future flooding and the complexities of restoring a listed building, particularly around insurance barriers and funding resilience measures. Their ability to overcome adversity while remaining at the heart of the community is truly inspiring, and I will continue to support their efforts in any way I can.
